Poundland has taken over online discounter Poundshop meaning its customers will be able to buy goods over the internet. It's all part of a 'transformation of Poundland' that will see a national roll-out of its own online store.
It had first trialled online shopping in 2021 and ran a trial in Birmingham, Walsall and then all the Midlands and parts of South Yorkshire. On Tuesday, bosses said the next stage is the expansion is to launch Pep&Co clothing and homewares beyond the UK - offering a Dealz online service in The Republic of Ireland.
Poundshop.com was founded in 2014 and has almost 400,000 customers across the UK, The Mirror reports. It employs around 65 workers at its distribution centre in Wednesbury, West Midlands. All jobs will remain protected under the new ownership.
A spokesman said all online orders will also continue to be processed as normal during the migration.
Barry Williams, Poundland managing director, said: “It’s great to warmly welcome the Poundshop.com team to Poundland. This acquisition puts power and pace behind our aspirations to make our amazing products and value available to customers across the UK and Ireland, however they choose to shop."
It follows the opening of seven new Poundland stores last year and the expansion of its clothing partnership and frozen food range. The budget retailer's most recent openings included branches in Rayleigh, Essex and Southampton in Hampshire.
Poundland was founded in 1990, primarily as a £1 store, initially selling clearance items. It now operates just under 900 stores across the UK and Ireland, and sells goods up to a limit of £5.
