Poundland issues urgent warning to shoppers as they pull £2 kids toy from shelves

An urgent warning has been issued by Poundland over a toy being a potential choking hazard for young children.

The wooden xylophone toy, priced at £2, was put on shelves by December 8 2022, reports Birmingham Live. However, the item has now been urgently recalled due to a serious risk to children's safety.

This safety recall is down to the small knobs at the end of the sticks detaching, and becoming a choking hazard.

Once these little balls come off, they could be placed in the mouth and swallowed, presenting a choking hazard for young children.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: "We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"However, the safety and confidence of our consumers and the quality of our products is at the heart of everything we do."

Due to this error, the product is not in compliance with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 law.

On the Government website, it warns consumers: "The product has been recalled as it has insufficient glue holding the balls on the end of the mallets in place.

"If these balls were to detach, they would become small parts that could be placed in a child's mouth causing them to choke."

The product description reads: "A wooden xylophone with colourful keys and two mallets."

The product details are as follows:

  • Brand: Poundland 'Small and Bright'
  • Barcode: 5059334963159
  • Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) number: 596315
