Poundland is shutting another store this month - after string of closures

Poundland is shutting another UK store this month - following a string of recent closures.

The high street retailer will say goodbye to its Cumbernauld shop in North Lanarkshire on June 11.

It comes after Poundland pulled down the shutters on its King’s Lynn branch on June 2.

Nine other Poundland sites have closed since February, including:

  • Poundland Team Valley, Gateshead - CLOSED May 25

  • Poundland Festival Park, Stoke - CLOSED May 19

  • Poundland Walkden - CLOSED February 28

Some shops were closed after their lease expired, while others have been relocated to bigger premises.

In fact, Poundland had previously announced plans to open or relocate 50 new shops by September this year.

The huge expansion plans will see Poundland open half a million square feet of retail space and create up to 800 new jobs.

Poundland told The Mirror it has opened, extended or relocated 33 sites so far this year, including:

Poundland opened 18 stores during October to December last year, including eight on December 10 alone.

In other retail news, Greggs has announced plans to open 150 new shops this year.

It comes after a record expansion in 2022, over which 186 new stores were opened across the UK.

Along with the new openings, Greggs said it plans to relocate 40 shops to new, larger sites, as well as trial a 24-hour drive thru service.

Another eight to 10 drive-thru locations will open this year, adding to the 17 drive-thrus currently spotted across the UK.
