Poundland and B&M shoppers hail £1 bathroom essential that bans mould 'for good'

Shoppers that follow cleaning guru Mrs Hinch have discovered a cheap method to keep their homes free of mould during the colder months.

As many of people are unable to heat their homes this winter due to rising energy costs, windows are remaining closed to retain any circulating heat. Manchester Evening News reports that another issue of rising bills is that many people are drying clothes indoors without any heat or form of ventilation.

This is not only a frustrating situation, but a perfect breeding area for mould, which can be dangerous for health. Mould is particularly dangerous for those with respiratory problems, so it's important to try and keep it away where possible.

However, Mrs Hinch fans have found an item that could keep mould at bay. The best part is, it's extremely affordable, costing just £1.

In the popular Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group on Facebook, one woman posted asking for tips to effectively remove mould from her bedroom wall. One respondent gave quite the unusual solution - Listerine mouthwash.

The Facebook user claimed that mouthwash can remove mould and stop it from re-growing. It is also perfect for keeping your surfaces mould-free for longer. The commenter said: "Original Listerine mouthwash stops it re-growing. Leave the window open a little for airflow a few times a week."

There seems to be some truth in this unique solution, as the Mirror asked cleaning expert Emily Barron from Rezigo if the trick would actually work. The cleaning guru assured them that this solution is actually effective.

She said: "Yes - Listerine can kill mould and keep it at bay as it kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria in your mouth, the same can be said for killing bacteria in your home. To kill the fungal spores of mould, use plain, clear, and inexpensive ethanol-based mouthwash.

"Dilute the mixture by using one part mouthwash to three parts water. Spray this on the affected areas once every few days and keep the room well-ventilated or use a dehumidifier to ensure airflow and reduce the risk for further build-up."

Elsewhere on social media, shoppers have pointed out that bottles of the mouthwash cost just £1 from stores like Poundland and B&M. It is also available at most major retailers, but prices can vary.

Meanwhile, David Philips, building expert at Property Rescue, also noted that you can help prevent the mould build-up by taking steps to reduce the amount of water you have evaporating inside your house.

Drying clothes outside is the first step, putting lids on pans while cooking to reduce steam output, and dehumidifiers are other tips the expert added. If you do find mould in your home, David explained: "To remove mould, you can dilute one part bleach in four parts water and gently wipe affected surfaces.

"Anti-mould paint can then be applied to cover stains and delay recurrence. But this will not provide a long-term solution. Ventilation in your property will need to be addressed to prevent the mould from returning."
