Potential Patriots OC candidate no longer on the market

You can scratch Cleveland Browns assistant coach Tommy Rees off Mike Vrabel’s long list of potential coordinator candidates for the New England Patriots.

Rees was considered one of the top options to serve as the offensive coordinator under Vrabel, who spent last season as a consultant with the Browns. There was a belief that he might potentially follow Vrabel to New England.

However, that option was taken off the table entirely on Tuesday after the Browns promoted Rees to offensive coordinator, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski made sure to keep one of his bright young coaches from walking out of the door.

One could surmise that Rees no longer being available only strengthens the possibility of Josh McDaniels returning as the Patriots offensive coordinator. McDaniels is a legendary offensive play-caller with years of experience calling plays in some of the biggest games in NFL history.

Mac Jones was a Pro Bowler with McDaniels at his side. Imagine what Drake Maye could be with improved coaching, a better offensive line and more receiving weapons. Going back to McDaniels worked in the past for the Patriots.

It could work again.
