The mum of tennis star Sir Andy Murray says she can see her sons owning a racehorse when they retire from tennis.
The Murray brothers - Andy and Jamie - have both had stellar tennis careers but aged 34 and 36 respectively are closer to the end of their careers than they are to the start. For Andy, his potential retirement has been a question for many fans following two major surgeries and a painful admission at the 2019 Australian Open that he feared his career was over.
However, the British star has since made his comeback and continues to entertain fans with his gritty performances as he seeks to improve his form, even though his results have been hit and miss. But, as Andy continues to play on the tour, his mum Judy Murray - spending the day at the Cheltenham Festival - explained that her two sons could be interested in owning a racehorse after they had retired from their sport.
Judy Murray said: "I was here two years ago and had the best day out. It's so good to see Cheltenham buzzing again, just how it should be, and the sun is shining today, so I've picked the very best day to come.
"I haven't had any winners, and in general I'm very unlucky, because I haven't got a clue! So I go with the colours I like, or sometimes the name. In the Pertemps I quite liked Ballyandy, for obvious reasons, and I went for Sassy Yet Classy. Andy (Murray) was here a couple of years ago. He had a box here and my brothers came and they had a whole lot of friends that came down and he absolutely loved it.
"The problem with what he and Jamie do is they're out of the country for pretty much 10/ 11 months of the year. Because that's what the circuit demands. I'm sure when he finishes playing he'll absolutely love days out like this. Anything that's competitive, he's right up for it."
Asked if she would be interested in owning a horse with Andy and Jamie, Judy said: "I'm not sure if I would, I could see them being interested in that because of the whole training thing and excelling and completely understanding that from an athlete point of view. I could see them getting interested in that, with a horse.
"And of course, they're both great friends and admirers of Sir Alex Ferguson, and he is one who owns horses and has got right into that side of things. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it floated their boat.
"I'm a massive Alex Ferguson fan so I'll be cheering on Protektorat in the Gold Cup tomorrow. Anything that you're going to get excited about, or bet on, you're far more likely to do it if you've got a vested interest, or a link somehow. So for sure, I'll be looking out for that.
"I'm down and back in one day from Scotland today. It's a long trek, but it's absolutely worth it. We'll probably get away about 6pm and then it's about five, five-and-a-half hours, so I'll be back about 11pm.”
Asked if she'll be back next year, she said: "For sure, definitely. This is an annual occurrence for me. It's a great day out, but it's also something I can do with my brothers, which is fabulous.
"They absolutely love it. They think they know a lot about horseracing, but given what they haven't won so far, that remains to be seen."
