TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan believes Manchester United are still a 'bigger' club than Liverpool despite their struggles in the Premier League since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
In those nine years since the Scot retired, United have been through five different managers, with Erik Ten Hag the sixth manager to be handed the opportunity to guide the Red Devils back on track after a barren spell of success over the past decade.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has overseen a prolonged period of success at Anfield as he's managed to record Champions League and Premier League triumphs in recent years. That's not at all, the German has also added an additional four trophies to the two landmark successes, swinging the major trophy count back in the Reds' favour (67-66).
However, despite the success under the German, the former Crystal Palace chairman believes Manchester United are still the biggest club in England, as proven by the media attention the club demands on a day-to-day basis regardless of their on-field success.
"Manchester United, globally, are a bigger club than Liverpool," said Jordan. "Liverpool stole a march on modern football by dominating the 70s and 80s but when the Premier League came around, who were the poster boys of the Premier League? Coincidentally, Manchester United.
"When you think of the Premier League and you think of its formative years; you think of Manchester United. By the way, every column inch. Every yard. Every news story. Every inch and every scintilla of broadcasting space is occupied by Manchester United's success, failures, fans, ownership model, players and share price."
He added: "Name me another club that has such a good and bad level of interest like United. And that drives eyes on the prize. They go and do deals. They don't have to go to Etihad, a company they already own, to get a £50 million pound shirt deal. They go to TeamViewer or to Chevrolet."
Despite Jordan's take, one look at the reception both clubs received this summer as they arrived at Don Mueang International Airport for their pre-season tour of the Far East paints a more equal picture. After not being able to tour for three years because of the restrictions put into the place by the Covid-19 pandemic, Klopp and his team received a mammoth reception as they touched down in the Bangkok.
It was quite the contrast to the more low-key greeting Ten Hag's side had received the day before, which disproves some of Jordan's theory that United are 'globally a bigger club'.
