A postal worker has died in a vicious attack by five dogs after her vehicle broke down.
Pamela Jane Rock from Florida died in hospital on Monday, August 22 after she was attacked in Putnam County the day before.
The 61-year-old had only recently completed her training to become a postwoman when she was set upon by the bulldog mixes.
Emergency responders had to apply three tourniquets to the stricken Rock before she was rushed to hospital, where doctors amputated her arm in an attempt to save her.
Sherrif Colonel Joseph Wells said a neighbour of the dog's owner tried to warn them off by firing a gun into the air, but this did not work.
He said: "One neighbour brought his firearm along and fired several shots in the air in an attempt to disrupt the attack. That was unsuccessful.
Police said the owner of the dogs rushed out to help Rock.
"We believe there have been other calls for service regarding these dogs," Wells added.
The dogs were seized and will now be euthanised. Putnam County Sheriff Homer DeLoach said: "Our hearts are with the victim and her family as they navigate through this tragic event.
"It is imperative that dog owners take responsibility in keeping their animals in a secured location for their safety and those around."
Animal control officials had been to the home of the dogs at least twice over the course of the last three years but deemed them not dangerous.
The owner is said to have cooperated with them and is now talking to police in their ongoing investigation, but no charges against them have been filed.
According to reports, the owner of the dogs had attempted to fence them in securely, but the canines had been able to move the rocks that lined the bottom of the fence.
Nearby brothers Tyler Neelson and Evan Russo told News4JAX the dogs were "like a pack of hyenas" and could hop the fence supposed to keep them in.
Russo said: "Yeah, they’d tear each other up in the yard."
The US Postal service paid tribute to their employee and said: "A postal family member lost her life in a dog bite attack.
"The US Postal Service is deeply saddened at the loss of our employee.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her co-workers at this time."
