POST Office workers are going on strike for the Queen’s Jubilee in a bid to boost their wages as shareholders reap multi-million-pound profits.
Crown Post Office workers will strike on Saturday, June 4 while administration and supply chain network workers will strike on Monday, June 6 – the same weekend as royalists across the UK will celebrate 70 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
The Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) represents Post Office workers and said its members were facing a pay freeze while the company made a profit of £35 million in 2020-2021.
Andy Furey, the CWU’s assistant secretary, said “affordability” was not a problem for the company and slammed the pay offer currently on the table as “degrading”.
He added: “Our members do not want to be in this situation, but they won’t accept humiliation either.
“Our members worked hard to deliver an excellent annual profit for the company.
“Frankly, their degrading excuse for an offer has only hardened members, who won’t tolerate a collapse in their living standards.
“We thank the public for their understanding and support, and we urge Post Office to get round the table and thrash out a real settlement that treats key worker heroes with the respect they deserve.”
A Post Office spokesperson said: “We’ve just been informed of the CWU decision to take strike action and will be putting in place a range of contingency measures to place to mitigate any impact the strikes may have.”
