Early Tuesday, Moncks Corner, South Carolina, experienced damage as a possible tornado, potentially spawned by Tropical Storm Debby, swept through the area. The National Weather Service in Charleston reported that Berkeley County Emergency Management identified the possible tornado just before 3 a.m.
The impact of the tornado was particularly felt at an Arby’s restaurant, where several windows were blown out. Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr. noted that in addition to the restaurant damage, there were downed power poles and several overturned cars in the area.
Fortunately, the reported injuries were minor, consisting of cuts and scrapes that did not require medical attention. Mayor Hamilton highlighted the efforts of town employees, including the fire department, who are working diligently in 'hurricane shifts' to ensure swift responses to any emergencies that may arise.
As the region braces for expected historic flooding, Berkeley County has taken proactive measures by opening emergency shelters for residents. This move aims to provide a safe haven for individuals in the face of potential challenges posed by the impending severe weather conditions.
Prior to the Moncks Corner incident, tornadoes were confirmed in other South Carolina cities, including Edisto Beach and Seabrook Island on Monday night. The series of tornadoes serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and destructive nature of severe weather events, urging communities to remain vigilant and prepared for any eventualities.
