Possible Celtic & Rangers implications as UEFA consider shock rule change

Champions League and Europa League games could go straight to penalties, with UEFA reportedly considering a major change to both competitions.

Discussions about scrapping extra time from knockout stage matches are 'gathering speed', with European football's governing body 'seriously considering' making a drastic alteration that would see drawn games go straight to spot-kicks after 90 minutes, reports The Guardian.

It is believed that the change, however, if implemented, wouldn't come into play until the end of the current television rights cycle in 2027.

While it may be in the distant future, it could still have drastic implications for both Celtic and Rangers.

The Parkhead side face German giants Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League knockout-stage playoff tie next Wednesday, with Rangers set to face one of FC Twente, Bodo/Glimt, Anderlecht, or Fenerbache in the last 16 of the Europa League in a few weeks.

No 'definitive proposal' has been made for the potential rule change, with the issue only being raised 'informally'.
