A chef who has been whipping up a storm of interest with his unique take on street food is now all set to open a new venue in Sunderland.
Matei Baran, who landed in the spotlight in 2018 when he showed off his cooking skills on MasterChef the Professionals , has made a name for himself with his #PoshStreetFood business which offers private catering, pop-up kitchens and cookery classes. And branching out following the popularity of tasting menus at his premises at Stack in Seaburn, he will be showcasing his food to a wider audience when he opens his new restaurant just in time for the weekend.

Called The Social & Kitchen by Chef Matei Baran, it will open in Waverley Terrace this Friday, following on from his current venue which is just outside Stack on Seaburn's seafront, where he's enjoyed growing success despite opening it during the pandemic. The chef, who also has a book out, Big Chef, Mini Chef, about cooking for and with children, said: “It’s been an incredibly difficult two years of trading with #PoshStreetFood at Seaburn but we were determined to weather the storm."
His new restaurant is inside The Pickled Radish bar which, prior to that, was the Pallion Working Men's Club and in the transformed space, his first customers will get to taste 'posh' versions of the likes of new sharer dishes, burgers and kebabs. Matei says he is "extremely proud" to be opening his new restaurant in the area adding: "We want to offer a warm, relaxed atmosphere to the people of Sunderland and surrounding areas. We hope our latest venture will be a great success."
And, beyond Sunderland, he has more plans in store - currently being kept under wraps - to further extend his street food menu, saying: "We have another project under way in North Shields, which we will be unveiling very soon.” After Friday, the new cafe will be open daily from noon until 11pm (10pm Sunday).
