Portuguese woman living in Glasgow lists location names that 'crack' her up

When it comes to location names, there are a places that certainly raise a few eyebrows - and Glasgow is no exception.

Many of us, at some point, have sat on the train reading the signs wondering what they mean and who came up with them as well as the meaning behind them.

And as well as that, non-Gaelic speakers have been seen trying pronounce the name underneath its English version and hope they don't butcher it.

Taking to TikTok to discuss these names, one Portuguese woman who is living in Glasgow has said there are many that "crack" her up.

Rita Simões-Muir - known as @ritasimoesmuir - has taken Glasgow TikTok by storm with her comparisons and jokes about the city.

Speaking in one of her latest TikTok videos she said: "I'm Portuguese and I've lived in Scotland for the past 10 years and here are some of the names of places that still crack me up.

"Coming in first place we have Crossmyloof. To be this sounds like the perfect insult 'Oh you're gonna be like that well Crossmyloof then'.

"In second place we have Kilbowie. Now personally I think he was a really great artist and I don't know what he's done wrong but clearly he's done something."

In third place was outside of Glasgow with Rita naming Dumfries as one of them.

She explained: "Now to me this sounds just like 'dumb fries' and I take this personally. Fries are not dumb. They're great."

Speaking about Killin she added: "There's a very murderous theme going on here" before ending her list with Castlemilk stating "I don't know who thought of putting these two words together but I approve. I love it."

Taking to the comments of her video one commented: "Chateau Lait as its sometimes called" to which Rita replied: "Ooooohh la la tres bien."

Another said: "Well Cross my loff then. I’m using that."

"Ah, memories! In my youth, when I lived in Glasgow, I used to go to Crossmyloof Ice Rink! Long gone, supermarket there now I believe." a third reminisced.
