The UK Foreign Office has updated its covid guidance for people travelling to Portugal.
Earlier this year, Portugal dropped a number of its coronavirus restrictions in a bid to boost tourism again. People no longer have to be vaccinated, take a test, or complete a passenger locator form for entry to mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.
A number of face masks rules remained in place, but now many of these have been dropped in mainland Portugal and the Azores.

Previously, while in Portugal, people were required to wear face masks:
- on entry to medical facilities, retirement and nursing homes
- on public transport
- in taxis and private hires, and
- when travelling by air
Now, the Portuguese government has dropped the mandatory use of face masks on public transport, air travel and in taxis and private hires in mainland Portugal and the Azores.. It "recommends" that you use a face mask in these settings, but you are not obligated too.
People must still wear face masks in medical settings as well as retirement and care homes.
In Madeira, masks must be worn:
- on entry to medical facilities and services including pharmacies,
- up to the 10th day from the onset of symptoms or a positive test result, if you have had COVID and are no longer isolating
