Portsmouth’s CEO Andrew Cullen is keen to bring goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu back to Fratton Park next season.
Irishman Bazunu has been impressive on loan at Portsmouth this season, keeping 13 clean sheets in 31 appearances. The 20-year-old was linked with a January move to Championship side Bournemouth but the move never materialised and he stayed at Pompey.
Cullen said they would like Bazunu to ply his trade at Portsmouth next season but admits it would be a tall order to lure the Irish stopper back to Fratton Park.
“We would love to keep Gavin Bazunu next season,” Cullen said during a recent fans' conference.
“But unless we get there, then Gavin is highly likely to be in at least the Championship, maybe even in the Premier League, either on a loan or as part of Manchester City’s squad,” he added.
Bazunu has started every competitive game for Ireland since his international debut in March 2021, and notably saved a penalty from Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo in September.
With 10 caps to his name so far, he has four international clean sheets for the Irish international team.
Bazunu joined City in 2018 but hasn’t played a first-team game for the Etihad club, his only outings for City came in the youth ranks.
Should Bazunu return to the first-team at City, he would face tough competition from the likes of Ederson and Zack Steffen for game time.
