Portmeirion plan for camper van site tipped for approval

A plan to create a camper van site at tourism attraction Portmeirion has been recommended for approval.

Bosses at the Gwynedd attraction want to build a camping site for 23 vehicles on part of the car park.

It would include new toilet and shower facilities as well as a reception.

Agent Cadnant Planning said the scheme would add to and broaden the range of accommodation that is available, and bring more overnight tourists to the site.

They added: “This would be beneficial to the food and retail outlets in Portmeirion village, as well as those in the wider area of Penrhyndeudraeth and beyond.

“This in turn would provide local employment and expenditure in the local economy.”

The Welsh Historic Gardens Trust opposed the scheme as they believed the buildings are “inappropriately close to the listed garden of Portmeirion”.

But heritage body CADW said they had no objections after “carefully considering” the application.

Officers in Gwynedd council’s planning department said they believed the proposal was “acceptable” and recommended the plan for approval.

Gwynedd planning committee will meet on Monday to discuss the application and make a decision.
