The Portland Timbers have successfully reached an agreement with Club América to secure the services of Uruguay forward Jonathan Rodríguez. Sources have confirmed that Rodríguez, who trained with América's U-23 squad on Monday, is finalizing a four-year designated player deal with the Timbers and is expected to travel to Portland later this week.
Reports indicate that the clubs had a pre-existing agreement in place for a $6 million transfer fee for the 30-year-old striker since last Friday. Rodríguez did not accompany the team to Guadalajara for the recent 3-0 victory over Chivas in the National Clasico, a part of the Concacaf Champions Cup, and was also absent from América's triumph over Tigres UANL last Sunday.
During his time with América, Rodríguez has been a key contributor, netting nine goals and providing three assists across various competitions. Prior to joining 'Aguilas', the forward had stints in Liga MX with Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul. In 2022, Rodríguez briefly plied his trade in the Saudi Pro League with Al Nassr, featuring in eight matches and scoring one goal before returning to Mexico.
Having made his debut for the Uruguay national team in 2014, Rodríguez recently earned a call-up under manager Marcelo Bielsa in 2023 after a two-year absence that included missing out on the 2022 World Cup.
