Portland State University has announced that it will temporarily halt receiving gifts and grants from the Boeing Company until a forum is held to discuss the ethics of such partnerships, as stated by the university's president.
This decision comes in the midst of nationwide protests, including those at PSU, against Israel's actions in Gaza. Student groups are advocating for educational institutions to sever ties with Israel and divest from companies that provide weapons, technology, and other resources to the country.
Boeing has revealed on its website that the Israel Defense Forces currently utilize nine different Boeing products, contributing significantly to the Israeli economy with a $3.5 billion benefit.
PSU President Ann Cudd acknowledged the calls from students and faculty to end the university's association with Boeing. While initially finding these demands perplexing due to PSU not having investments in Boeing but accepting philanthropic donations from the company, Cudd emphasized the importance of listening to the concerns raised by the community.
In response to the feedback, PSU plans to organize a two-hour moderated debate in May involving faculty and students to delve deeper into the issue.
Boeing, on its official website, highlights its longstanding relationship with Israel, spanning over 75 years since the establishment of the State of Israel.
