Coban Porter, the younger brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter and Jontay Porter, has been sentenced to six years in prison for killing a 42-year-old woman in a drunken driving crash last year. Porter, who was a sophomore playing basketball for the University of Denver at the time of his arrest, pleaded guilty to DUI vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
The incident occurred on January 22 just before 2 a.m. when Porter, driving around 50 mph, ran a red light at South University Boulevard and crashed his vehicle into Katharina Rothman's car. The crash resulted in the death of Rothman and serious injuries to her 47-year-old passenger, Jason Branch.
Porter, who had an average of 11.4 points as a freshman in college, with 2.8 rebounds and a 41.9% field goal percentage in 28 games, acknowledged his actions and accepted the consequences of his actions.
Jontay Porter Banned from NBA for Betting Violations
In a separate incident, Jontay Porter, brother of Coban and Michael Porter, has been banned from the NBA after an investigation revealed that he disclosed confidential information to sports bettors and bet on games in violation of league rules.
The investigation found that Jontay disclosed confidential information about his health status to an NBA bettor before a game, leading to a substantial bet being placed on his underperformance. The NBA discovered that Jontay placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using an associate's betting account while he was with the Toronto Raptors or its G League team, Raptors 905.
These incidents have cast a shadow over the Porter family, with Coban facing a prison sentence and Jontay being banned from the NBA. Meanwhile, Michael Porter and the Denver Nuggets are set to begin their playoff campaign in defense of their NBA title.
