Portadown confirm signing of former Finn Harps midfielder Leo Donnellan

Portadown have made their third signing of the summer transfer window with the capture of former Finn Harps midfielder Leo Donnellan.

The Londoner, who began his career in the QPR youth system and also played for Maidstone and Dagenham and Redbridge, was unveiled by the Mid Ulster club on Sunday.

The 23-year-old, who represented the Republic of Ireland at U18 level, joins defender Lee Upton and striker Alberto Balde as new arrivals at Shamrock Park.

Donnellan, who was most recently with Harrow Borough in England, told We Are Ports TV that working under Paul Doolin was one of the key reasons behind making the move.

“I spoke to Paul who was obviously a big factor in coming here,” he said. “I also heard things about the club, was impressed and I just wanted to get over and get started.

“The first session was really good and all the lads and staff have been really welcoming, so I just want to get my head down, crack on and I’m looking forward to the games.”

Asked to describe himself as a player, he said: “I like to think I’m box-to-box, I can get up and down, put in some strong tackles and hopefully nick a few goals as well.”

Donnellan spent the 2020 season with Finn Harps and helped the Ballybofey club avoid relegation from the League of Ireland Premier Division.

“It was really good coming over the water and playing under Ollie Horgan,” he said. “We had a successful year and stayed up. Avoiding relegation was the main target which was achieved. It was just a really good experience.”

Portadown, who safeguarded their top flight status via the play-offs in May, kick off the new Danske Bank Premiership campaign with a trip to champions Linfield on August 13.
