A Welsh cake shop in the small harbour town of Solva, Pembrokeshire, which faced closure has announced that it's staying open for another summer having come to an agreement with the building's owners.
MamGu Welshcakes was started by Becky Swift and Thea Noble and has been going since 2016 after the pair's love of Pembrokeshire and cake transcended into a fully fledged business. In September 2022, they broke the news that Mamgu Welshcakes had not been given the option to renew its lease at Main Street in the town.
But now, just five months later, an agreement to keep the cafe and shop open has been settled with the building's owner - for another year at least. Speaking to WalesOnline, Becky said: "We are absolutely thrilled that we can stay open in Solva for another year. It means we can keep our amazing team of staff employed for longer and carry on offering seasonal work to our returning summer staff.

"However, I think our amazing loyal customers are even more happy than us. The rumour that we are staying open has been flying around North Pembrokeshire for the last few weeks (don't tell anyone your secrets around here!) and we have been inundated with messages of support. It's a little bit scary how quickly the bookings for half term and St David's Day have been coming in since we've officially announced the news."
Posting a photo on Instagram to pass on the message, MamGu wrote:"The rumours are true. Cat's outta the bag. WE'RE STAYING FOR ANOTHER YEAR!!! The doors to our beautiful home in Solva are staying open until the end of 2023!!!"
And it wasn't long before Welsh cake lovers of Instagram flooded their comments. User @pilipalabach wrote: "This makes me so happy!!, while @iain.humphries said: "Fantastic news! Look fwd to my Sunday breakfast on 4th March even more now..."
A third, @helena.mb, commented: "so happy you guys will still be here when i next come back to pembs" "THIS IS THE BEST NEWS OF 2023!!!!!!! Absolutely made up for you!" added another.
The Welsh cakes can be picked up in person or bought online. For more information, see the website.
