'Popular' uni student dies after 'medical incident' while out at nightclub

An 18-year-old university student has died after suffering a “medical incident” while out at a nightclub.

George Franks-Herbert, a first-year Bristol University student, died in the early hours on Tuesday.

Paramedics and the police were called to the Gravity nightclub on the Clifton Triangle at around 2.14am to what was described as a medical incident, Bristol Live reported.

However, George was not able to be revived and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed.

A Pro Vice-Chancellor at Bristol University paid tribute to George, who studied Biochemistry, describing him as a "popular student who had made lots of friends and he was enjoying his time in Bristol".

She added that staff are reaching out to George's friends and coursemates to offer help and support.

The university is encouraging any students affected by George's death to reach out to their wellbeing services, available here.

George's death is not believed to be suspicious, police said, but added that enquiries will be conducted on behalf of the coroner.

Paying tribute to George, Professor Sarah Purdy, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience at Bristol University, said: “We are all very sorry to hear about the death of first year Biochemistry student George Franks-Herbert.

“On behalf of the University, I would like to offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“I know this news will affect many of our students and staff deeply.

“We are in the process of reaching out to George’s friends and those who studied with him to offer our help and support, and we encourage anyone who is affected by this tragic news to contact our wellbeing services for support.”

A spokesperson for the Gravity nightclub said: "There has been a very tragic incident recently. The club is however respecting the family's privacy at this very difficult time, which we hope you can appreciate.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased."

In a statement, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "At approximately 2.14am on Tuesday 1 February, police were called to assist the ambulance service with a medical incident they were dealing with at Gravity nightclub, Queens Road, Bristol.
