Popular tourist resorts forced to shut down 'until further notice'

A number of popular tourists resorts have had to close due to unprecedented weather conditions in recent months.

More than a million people are estimated to travel from the UK to take skiing holidays in countries such as France and Switzerland each year. But a number of low-level resorts have had to close, as temperatures have been too high for snow deep enough to facilitate winter sports.

The Local reports the period immediately after Christmas was the warmest since 1997 in France and much of the country experienced “exceptionally high” temperatures, averaging at least 7 to 8C above seasonal norms.

Some 30 resorts in the French Pyrenees have had to close their ski areas in recent days.

Switzerland has also seen some very mild weather, and Swiss resort Splugen-Tambo said it had been forced to close "until further notice". In a statement on social media, it said: "Unfortunately, due to a lack of snow, heavy rainfall and high temperature, we have to close our ski area from tomorrow, January 2nd, 2023 until further notice.

"It is no longer possible for us to prepare the slopes because we have too much water on our slopes and the snow no longer freezes at night".

The BBC reports a "snow shortage", adding that Austrian resorts around Salzburg last had snow a month ago.
