Popular Sunderland bistro closes temporarily after car crashes into front of building causing 'substantial damage'

A popular bistro in Sunderland has been forced to close temporarily after a car crashed into the front of the building. The impact caused "substantial damage" at Borneo Bistro and means it is now closed for the rest of the week.

Northumbria Police was called to the bistro on Hylton Road, Sunderland shortly after 1am on Wednesday after the force received a report that a vehicle had crashed into it. Officers attended and found that substantial damage had been caused to the front of the shop.

In a post on Facebook, the bistro said: "Sorry everyone but we are going to have to #close for #rest of the #week. A car crashed into the front of Borneos in the early hours of the morning and has done damage to the front of the building.

Police said the vehicle involved had already left the scene when officers arrived. The force has since launched an investigation and officers are now appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.
