Popular resorts in Spain introduce strict new Covid rules for bars and restaurants

Holidaymakers planning half-term trips to some of Spain's most popular resorts could face tough new Covid restrictions, with bar, pubs and restaurants hit by curfew.

Local government officials in the Canary Islands have announced a heightened level of alert for Gran Canaria and La Palma following a spike in the number of Omicron infections.

The increased alert level for Gran Canaria and La Palma follows a similar move earlier this month in neighbouring Tenerife. All three destinations are now at Covid alert level four.

The latest official health bulletin stated: "Pressure now being applied to the Canary Islands health service is higher than at any other time during the pandemic. Around 1 in 5 of all deaths associated with Covid-19 have occurred during this sixth wave. Around 1/3 of all hospital capacity is now dedicated to coronavirus patients, 60 per cent of that is on Tenerife."

Regulations include pubs and restaurants placed under curfew and forcing them to close their doors at midnight every night. Only groups up to six people are allowed to meet indoors or outside if they are not part of the same household group.

Covid passports are also required to enter some venues including bars, restaurants, gyms and nightclubs. Indoor and outdoor dining is restricted to six people per table.

Holidaymakers must even book a slot to use some beaches in Tenerife. Other Canary island holiday destinations of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote remain at the lower Covid alert level three.

Throughout Spain, facemasks remain mandatory indoors, outdoors and on all public transport.
