Popular pizza restaurant The Dough Thrower to open new takeaway branch in Cardiff

Popular Cardiff restaurant The Dough Thrower is opening a second branch in the capital. The Canton-based pizza restaurant has proved a hit with the city's foodies after opening on Cowbridge Road East in 2017, but is now expanding with a takeaway joint.

Earlier in 2022, the pizzeria submitted plans to open its second site in Cardiff to the council, hoping to take over the site of Natural Nails salon on Whitchurch Road. Those plans were subsequently improved, with the new spot set to open on the street in the coming months. Work has begun on converting the empty unit into a restaurant, with a sign outside advertising vacancies for 'chefs, pizza makers and drivers'.

The popular restaurant opened opposite Victoria Park five years ago, with a menu offering classic toppings such as Margherita and pepperoni. However, there are also more unusual pizzas on offer such as the 'Funghi of the Forest' - a white garlic base cheese sauce with mushrooms drizzled in truffle oil - and the 'Philly Cheesesteak' - a four Swiss cheese sauce with 24 hour slow-cooked beef brisket and caramelised red peppers.

Priding itself on its locally sourced, fresh ingredients and no-nonsense food, the Dough Thrower has won over many pizza fans in the capital, including some of Wales' finest sporting heroes. Geraint Thomas and George North chose the restaurant as the place to tuck into a victory meal after the Tour de France winner celebrated his Cardiff homecoming in 2018.

The pizzeria joins other Cardiff foodie favourites on Whitchurch Road, with the likes of Brother Thai, Alex Gooch, Vivo Amigo, and Waterloo Tea all well established on the street. However, it is not the only new restaurant popping up there, with a new venture set to launch in the coming days.

Mint & Mustard have also closed and will reopen as Chai Social (Frances Taylor)

Award-winning Indian restaurant Mint & Mustard has closed its Whitchurch Road branch and is set to reopen under a new title as Chai Social. The new restaurant, which like Chai Street in the city centre is owned by Mint & Mustard itself, is set to open on July 27.

It promises to serve up "British and European Classics with an authentic Indian twist" with a variety of breakfasts, lunches and dinners on offer. As well as huge sharing plates, indulgent desserts and freshly prepared specials are also on the menu.

The new additions to Whitchurch Road also come days after another popular Cardiff pizzeria announced it was opening a second branch after more than 35 years in the business. Family-run Pizzeria Villaggio, one of the capital's oldest Italian restaurants, first opened on Merthyr Road in Whitchurch in 1986 but is now expanding to Rhydypenau.

A post, which was shared across the restaurant's Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts, read: "Breaking News... We are delighted to announce that the family business is expanding further. Pizzeria Villaggio Rhydypenau Crossroads will be opening very soon on Fidlas Road, on the site of the previous Bon Cafe. Stay tuned for more news soon."
