Popular park 'like a river' as worried residents issue council request

A popular Merseyside park turned into a "river" after heavy rain led to flood warnings.

Merseyside has been hit with heavy downpours as rain caused disruption to the region's roads. A flood warning was issued with river levels remaining high, and motorists were urged to take care.

But one community park turned into "a river" after huge puddles of water built up on the grass. Resident John Carine shared his concerns over "suitable infrastructure" following the scenes at Jubilee Park in Huyton.

He told the ECHO: "The issue with Jubilee Park only started after the Bowring Park school development and it seems to be the same in Prescot. Knowsley has built thousands of houses but is the infrastructure there, can the aging sewer systems handle all these new properties?"

Posting on social media, residents also said there had been flooding by the park's gates as comments were made about large puddles. Mr Carine wrote: "More raw sewage flooding Jubilee park Knowsley Council need to get this sorted.

Concerns were raised the park had become 'a river' (UGC)

"The drains are obviously not suitable with all the new builds that have gone up. This is disgusting last time there where tampons left all over the paths."

Flooding was also reported on roads and fields elsewhere in Knowsley including in Halewood and Prescot. Earlier this week, Knowsley Council warned residents of a flood alert around the River Alt from Huyton to Formby.

This included watercourses in Kirkby, Fazakerley, Maghull, Formby, Aughton, Sefton and Lunt. They said: "Heavy rain is forecast in the area over the course of the week.

"With watercourses already high and the ground saturated, flooding is possible. Flood warnings will be issued as required. Please stay tuned to local weather forecasts for further information."

Knowsley Council has since confirmed to the ECHO that recent flooding has been due to the weather as a spokesperson said: "Like other areas in the country, the Borough has experienced significant rainfall recently."
