Popular Newport bar to undergo revamp before reopening after being gutted by fire last year

A popular bar which had to close after it was severely damaged in a fire last year is set to reopen in the coming months with a new look.

Breeze Bar on Cambrian Road in Newport was forced to shut indefinitely after it was hit by a fire on December 16 last year. At the time witnesses reported seeing two fire engines attending the blaze after crews said a kitchen grill caught fire that evening, just before the bar was due to show the Liverpool v Newcastle match.

The bar, which is located next to Ladbrokes and the John Wallace Linton Wetherspoon pub, has been closed indefinitely ever since with social media posts indicating no reopening date.

However, Jack Bannister, who runs the bar, has confirmed it will reopen in the spring with a new-look interior which will include two music rooms and the ability to host private functions and events.

"We are looking to reopen [at the] end of March, early April," Mr Bannister said.

"We are repairing the electric system, completing new VIP toilets and soundproofing the VIP room to create two rooms of music as opposed to the one [we have] currently."

Mr Bannister said the changes would mean "the VIP room is available for private hire on certain days" in addition to its regular events which include broadcasting live sport, DJ nights and VIP events.

Elsewhere in Newport, the redeveloped Newport Market has been confirmed to reopen on March 11. The Grade-II listed Victorian market has been undergoing a revamp courtesy of developers Loft Co who have committed to creating a "market for the 21st century".

It will feature a food court and bar on the ground floor, 70 workspaces, refurbished market stalls, a gym and a rooftop garden. Read more about some of the exciting traders going into the refurbished market here.
