Popular Lanarkshire gala day set to return this summer

The biggest day of the year in Rutherglen is set to return this summer.

Landemer Day will be back after a two year absence, with the gala day taking place on June 11.

Organisers told Lanarkshire Live they are delighted to be back, after the coronavirus pandemic halted the popular Main Street bash, and they hope it will pull the community together after the past two years.

However the Rutherglen event will be tinged with sadness, as the Landemer committee pay tribute to long-standing member Ian Duncan, who recently passed away from cancer.

Jim Nixon of the committee said: "Arrangements for the day will take on the usual format with the 2022 Landemer Queen, chosen from a local high school (this year Trinity High), being crowned.

"There will be fundraising stalls, street entertainment and live music as well as kiddies rides, bouncy castles and hopefully the climbing wall to add to the attractions of the day.

"Thank to the support of South Lanarkshire Arts and Leisure the primary school fun runs have been renamed 'The Ian Duncan Fun Runs' in memory of our secretary Ian, who played a very big part in all of our Landemer events in recent years and who will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

"The art competition will also be going ahead.

"I hope that this gives a flavour of what will be happening and that the resumption of our local gala day will be a focus for the coming together of our wider community after the two horrible years of COVID restrictions."

Stalls will be situated at the Mill Street end of the Main Street.

Applications form for stalls should be available soon and hopefully these will be available online.

The cost of hiring a stall remains £26 per stall and if anyone is requesting the same site as previous years it would be helpful to get your application in quickly.

The timetable for the Fun Runs is May 12 at Quarryfield Park, May 19 ay Halfway Park, May 26 at Cambuslang Park and June 9 at Overtoun Park with a start time of 4.15 each day.

The runs will be age related with a run for parents and toddlers, and one for each stage group P1 - P3, P4 -P5, and P6 - P7.
