Popular Lanarkshire Christmas initiative set to return

A popular Lanarkshire Christmas initiative aimed at bringing good cheer to neighbourhoods is set to return for a third year.

The Rutherglen Wonderful Winter Windows idea started up in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic raged, and encouraged locals in the Royal Burgh to decorate their windows with festive designs.

The Facebook page proved popular with locals and returned last year, with a number of creative displays being whipped up, touching upon classic Christmas scenes, popular films and even politics.

The idea has also been combined with a gift drive and a food bank collection, letting people in the area help out those in need.

Now it is back for a third year, and organiser Natalie McKee told Lanarkshire Live she is looking forward to seeing how creative the entries are this December.

She told us: "We're really looking forward to once again providing some festive cheer for local residents.

"I'm heartened by all the enthusiasm for the windows, esp people reaching out to donate to our toy drive and foodbank collection.

Natalie McKee has organised the Rutherglen Wonderful Winter Windows display (RGR)

"I would encourage people to join us in decorating a window, doesn't need to be anything fancy and to spread the word,so we can help local people struggling during these difficult times."

The toy drive will run from December 2 through until December 5, with the foodbank collection then running from December 5 until December 23.

A number of spots on the route will be marked as collection points, meaning items can be donated there and will then be passed to local foodbanks.

Items suggested for donation include non perishable food, tinned fruit, long life milk, tinned meals and small packets of coffee, tea and washing powder.

The full route can be found here .
