Popular Kilmarnock mascot is star of new picture book illustrated by lifelong fan

Kilmarnock fans have been treated to a new publication that will grab their attention.

An exciting new picture book, based on popular club mascot Captain Conker, has hit the shelves.

Created by Kilmarnock-based NaeBother Books, and sponsored by Co-op UK and Foundation Scotland, the story of the squirrel superhero is sure to delight young fans and families alike.

Fans can pick up a copy from the Killie superstore at the stadium as well as the club website.

After engaging with Ayrshire’s creative young minds through school visits, competition winners Rebecca Allan and Isla Logie from Lainshaw Primary in Stewarton helped author Shirley Husband with the inspiration for a tale of pitch sabotage and bad badgers.

Written in an engaging, rhyming style, the book includes important themes of health, fitness, community, sportsmanship and friendship.

The illustrations have been created in vibrant, digital colour by local illustrator and designer Maurice Hynds, who is also a lifelong Kilmarnock supporter.

Fans of all ages will be able to spot plenty of clever details and enjoy the book as a brilliant celebration of the club.

Kilmarnock FC’s head of marketing and commercial operations Gregg McEwan said: “Since arriving at Rugby Park, Captain Conker has proven to be a massive hit with our young supporters and we’re sure that they’ll love reading about his amazing adventure.

“Having worked closely with Maurice and Shirley for a number of years now, I knew we would be in safe hands in a partnership with NaeBother.

"The idea took off working alongside the KCST [Kilmarnock Community Sports Trust] and their partners to create a special family book and I can’t wait to see people’s faces as they pick it up for the first time.”

NaeBother Books are based at 17 Portland Road, Kilmarnock, KA1 2BT and you can find them online.
