Popular Indian restaurant hit with zero-star food hygiene rating

A popular Indian restaurant has been given the lowest food hygiene rating following its latest inspection.

Inspectors from Wirral Council found the Wirral Tandoori requires "urgent improvement." The Bromborough restaurant which also does deliveries was hit with a zero-star rating, placing it among the worst-rated on Merseyside.

The restaurant is popular in the area and has a four star rating on Trip Advisor offering everything from Tarka Dhal to Tandoori Chicken. The full report on Wirral Tandoori has not been made available yet.

Details released along with the zero star rating show inspectors felt improvements were needed in two key areas, including management of food safety and hygienic food handling.

Management of food safety includes an assessment of systems and checks in place to ensure food is safe to eat, evidence that staff knows about food safety, and the food safety officer’s confidence that standards will be maintained in the future. In this area the restaurant was told that "urgent improvement" was necessary.

The ‘hygienic food handling’ of the restaurant takes into account preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage. The cleanliness and condition of the restaurant building and facilities were also assessed with inspectors saying that a "major improvement" was necessary. This area includes cleanliness and condition issues such as layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities, and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

Owner Rayim Ullah said the reason the restaurant was given the lowest rating was because food hygiene records were out of date by "just one week" and a re-inspection has been booked.

He said: "I would like to assure our customers that there was nothing seriously wrong found and I apologise to them. I have been running the Wirral tandoori for over 23 years and it's always been safe to eat here. Just little oversight here and there and our kitchen is open to the public. We have nothing to hide."
