Popular Highland cow motorway model returns to field home after theft

A familiar figure could be back in position putting a smile on motorists faces in time for Christmas.

Windy, the life-sized model of a Highland cow that was stolen from her field at Mains of Balhaldie near Braco, has been found.

Determined thieves made off with Windy during the night of Friday, November 4 even though she was bolted into concrete and behind barbed wire and electric fences.

Windy’s owner, local artist Sarah Spofforth-McOuat, was quick to make an appeal asking people to keep an eye out for the unmistakable sculpture, which was a popular sight on the A9 southbound, especially when Sarah dressed her up to mark special occasions.

The post about Windy’s disappearance was shared more than 600 times on social media and threw up possible sightings.

Sarah is convinced that making Windy too hot to handle has played a big part in her return.

She said: “The post reached well over 50,000 people on Facebook. Everybody has been amazing. I’m really happy that she is home.

“She’s a bit bruised, shocked and battered from the ordeal but she is home thanks to the power of social media.”

The police investigation into the disappearance is still ongoing.

The sculpture has returned with a few cracks, which Sarah will fix, and she will be putting in even more security so that Windy can get back to her usual spot.

Sarah added: “We are so pleased. She needs a bit of TLC with a spray can but I’m hoping she will be back in situ before Christmas looking very festive.

“A massive thank you to everyone who was involved in finding our Windy. You have all been brilliant.”
