Popular harbour gala is set to make welcome comeback to Girvan after Covid call-offs

One of Girvan’s most eagerly-anticipated events is set to make a comeback in 2022.

For the RNLI Girvan Lifeboat crew has announced plans to stage their harbour gala.

The team has pencilled in Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7 as the weekend to stage the popular event, which attracts locals and visitors alike.

Since 2020, the festival has been put on the backburner due to Covid lockdowns, social distancing restrictions and restrictions over public gatherings.

However, as the country now emerges from the pandemic and with it the easing of restrictions, organisers are more confident about staging this year’s gala showpiece.

A message on RNLI Girvan Lifeboat’s social media page said: “We are planning for the harbour gala weekend to return this year o August 6/7.

“Let us know what you would like to see over that weekend.”

Over the course of the weekend, there’s fun for all the family with the RNLI rescue display, stalls, funfair, emergency services area, raft race and much more.

If you have suggestions over what you’d like to see at the harbour gala, get in touch with the crew via Facebook.

In other news, the crew has reinstated their collection box outside the lifeboat station in Knockcushan Street and are encouraging members of the public to help with any donations, big or small.

In a direct appeal, a spokesperson said: "We are delighted to inform you that we have reinstated our large collection box outside the lifeboat station.

"As you no doubt are aware, our original box was vandalised and damaged beyond repair last November.

"Many of you made donations and supported us following this which we’re extremely grateful for.

"We would like to thank Girvan and District Community Council who kindly funded a replacement box which now sits prominently once more outside the station.

"As we rely solely on donations, this collection box is a vital source of income and it’s great to have it back."
