Popular Glasgow deli owner announces exciting move to Finnieston cafe

Italian food lovers in Glasgow will be able to indulge in antipasti and pizza dishes at a west end cocktail bar later this month.

The owner of La Pastina Deli, which is based in Hillhead, said he's excited to return to Finnieston to see how the area has evolved over the years.

John Traynor, who worked as a chef in Finnieston in 2011, is preparing to launch his new menu at the Kelvingrove Cafe, on Argyle Street, from October 12.

John explained: “I first worked in Finnieston in 2011 when it was up and coming and I worked there for the best part of four and a half years before I moved on.

“I kept in contact with a lot of the restaurant owners and people working in the industry so when I opened the deli a year ago, the owner of Kelvingrove Cafe spoke to me about the potential to come and take over the kitchen for a short period of time.

“He asked us if we would be willing to go in and do the food at night. It fits because Kelvingrove Cafe has just won best cocktail bar in Scotland and we won best deli last year.”

The takeaway deli, which sits at 180 Byres Road, imports meat directly from Italy.

John hopes that the new service will launch on October 12, once they have learned how to work the pizza oven.

The menu has already been agreed upon and will include small plates, antipasti, and small pizza.

He added: “I think that area of the city has so many great places to eat and it will be quite interesting for me to go back down after six years to see how it is.

“We have been down at night but I am interested and excited to see how Finnieston has evolved over the years, particularly since 2011 as the Hydro didn’t exist back then.

“It’s definitely an area that has always grown. Places have opened and closed in the last ten years but there is no venue like Kelvingrove Cafe to give the best quality of cheese, meats and pizzas.

“The bar itself is great and the staff are very knowledgeable. I am very much looking forward to this new venture.”
