Popular former Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder to be remembered with race day and online charity auction

Much-loved former Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder will be remembered Newmarket Racecourse today at the Glenn Roeder Raceday which will raise funds for 'The Brain Tumour Charity'. The card coincides with a silent online auction in which a host of incredible experiences are up for sale, with all money going to charity.

Roeder passed away in February 2021 at the age of 65 after a long battle with a brain tumour diagnosed in 2003. After two years away from the game following surgery, he returned to football and took up a role at Newcastle, eventually taking over as first-team coach in 2006 and guiding the Magpies from the foot of the table to 2006 InterToto Cup glory.

He was an avid horse racing fan and often attended racing events to alleviate the pressure of Premier League management, speaking to trainers and jockeys and placing the odd bet here or there.

Roeder’s daughter Holly, who works as racing secretary to Newmarket trainer Robert Cowell, said: “Dad was passionate about his racing and loved being around racing people. A race day in his memory seemed an obvious and fitting way to celebrate his life, and we are extremely grateful to Newmarket Racecourses’ general manager, Sophie Able, and all our supporters who have come together to help raise vital funds for such an important charity."

The race day will run today (Saturday, July 23) alongside a silent online auction with some once in a lifetime experiences up for grabs. Magpies fans may be interested in the chance for a round of golf with Les Ferdinand and Andy Sinton or a hospitality and training day at Newcastle United for six people.

Other auctions are running for a host of fine dining and Michelin-starred experiences, corporate boxes at a number of Premier League clubs or holidays both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Both the auction and the race day will raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity, hoping to increase the rate of survival for more than five years from just 12%. 33 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour every single day in the UK.
