Popular Edinburgh pub to transform historic bridge into lit-up outdoor beer garden

The owners behind a popular Edinburgh waterside pub have begun restoring a historic bridge into a beer garden for customers.

Teuchters Landing, near the shore in Leith, have become one of the go-to boozers in the north east of Edinburgh with a wide selection of craft beers and are set to add yet another top-notch attraction to their pub with the addition of a new customer terrace.

The pub and Forth Ports are overseeing the renovation of the Category A-Listed Rennie’s Isle Swing Bridge located at the Water of Leith to conserve the landmark.

In February 2022, plans were drawn up that would see the historic landmark, of which there are only three in the world, brought back to life as a public walkway and outdoor seating area.

Forth Ports are also understood to be working in conjunction with Teuchters Landing on the bridge. Images shared on the pub's social media platforms show signs of recent progress as Edinburgh Live understands staff hope to present the finished article to customers at the start of May during the coronation bank holiday weekend.

The bridge is also to have benches, seating and lights installed as well as functioning as a walkway.

The swing bridge, named after the prominent Scottish engineer John Rennie, was constructed around 1800 as part of the design of Leith docks.

John Rennie was a prominent Scottish civil engineer and he was also involved in the design of Leith docks, the Royal Ireland Canal, the Crinan Canal, Waterloo Bridge, London Bridge and the breakwater at Plymouth Sound amongst other notable structures.

Scaffolding around the bridge has been erected in recent weeks as work to replace the timber structure, redecorate, install bollards and remove trolley rails gets underway.

With the bridge acting as a crossing along the Water of Leith, the new outdoor seating area is expected to provide customers with the perfect summer backdrop while enjoying a local cask beer or malt whisky.
