Popular Edinburgh pub starts crowdfunding campaign to open new bar in Portobello

A Scottish brewery has taken to the internet to crowdfund the opening of a new Edinburgh bar in Portobello.

Vault City Brewing is a leading UK brewery based in Edinburgh and makes some of Britain’s best selling sour beers.

They have recently launched a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of raising £25,000 to help fund a new bar called “The Porty Vault” just a stone's throw away from the brewery itself.

Those who contribute to the project can expect exclusive deals and experiences when the bar opens and supporters can contribute to the campaign from £50.

Campaigners will get 1.5x their donation back as bar vouchers. For example, if someone donates £200 then they will get £300 worth of vouchers in return, as well as a t-shirt and invitation to their exclusive launch event.

The new bar would take over the site of the Skylark Bar on Portobello High Street and will feature more than 20 beers from the Vault City brewery, including some of their famous sour beers, as well as established favourites and guest beers.

The venue will also serve food, organised by chef Darren Lim, a steakhouse specialist with more than 25 years of experience.The menu will be BBQ inspired, with influences from Argentina, Patagonia and the US.

Steven Smith-Hay, Vault City Brewing’s co-founder, said: “This is one of our most exciting announcements yet and a big leap forward for Vault City.

“Our brewery is already in Portobello, we’re part of the community there and we always will be. We considered opening a brewery tap-room, but we felt that we could do more to support the local High Street by transforming an existing site. Opening a new bar right here on home turf is a dream.

“We have already enjoyed great success with the Wee Vault and adding a new bar to the portfolio is a natural step. As with any part of the business, we will grow with demand, and there’s every possibility we could open bars in other locations around the country.

“We’ve received great feedback from our local community, supporters, and our customers, and I’m delighted to see that we’re already over a third of the way there with our funding goal. I can’t wait for more people to be able to join the modern sour beer revolution.”

The crowdfunding campaign has ten days left and has currently raised more than £15,000 of it’s £25,000 target
