Popular Co Fermanagh butcher moves into historic bank premises

A popular butcher shop in Co Fermanagh has made the move to the site of the old Ulster Bank building in Irvinestown.

Stephen Millar and Millar Meats moved into their new home on Tuesday, having spent the last 18 years at his former premises on Main Street. The old premises shut up shop on Saturday past for the last time.

Speaking to MyFermanagh , Stephen said it was an exciting time for the business but that it was bittersweet to be leaving the old premises behind.

"We have done a complete refurbishment on the entire premises we are transferring over the existing business to start and we’ll have a hot food bar and cold food as well," Stephen said.

“We were there 18 years in the old place and we were flabbergasted when we realised that. It took us a while to get everything finished with Covid and Brexit and one thing or another but it’s good to finally be ready to go.

“It certainly hit us when we were closing up for the last time. We were reminiscing about some of the good times and the hard times in the shop.

“It was definitely a little bit sad when the shutter went down for the final time. But onwards and upwards, and everyone in the town has been so supportive.

Stephen added that it was time for the business to move into larger premises as it expanded. The butcher has won several awards for his products over the years.

“We just needed more space we maybe didn’t have as much as we needed but sure that is always the way.

“It’s just a delight to bring back one of the old iconic buildings in Irvinestown. It was sitting empty since Ulster Bank vacated it in 2018. One of the employees who worked in the bank actually provided us with some memorabilia as well so that was a lovely touch.”
