Popular Bristol pub The Cornubia jumps from zero hygiene rating to three

A popular Bristol pub has bounced back after getting a zero hygiene rating in an inspection, and has increased its score to three out of five. The Cornubia was recently told by the Food Standards Agency that it was in need of 'urgent improvement' following an inspection on March 14.

But, following another inspection on April 11, the pub has now been given a rating of three and has been told it is "generally satisfactory". Phil Bennett, who has run the Redcliffe pub for 11 years, says they have now done everything they have been asked to do to improve.

The pub is mostly focused on drinks, but they serve a few bits of food including pies and sausage rolls. At the first inspection, they were asked to make were to keep better records and to conduct better temperature checks on their oven, and Phil says they have followed these instructions.

"We've done everything that the council asked us to do for health and safety," he told Bristol Live. And he added that the changes they were asked to make weren't drastic.

"It wasn't major, get a new oven or anything like that. All we've done, we've complied with what was asked of us by the council and we got three stars. That's basically it really."

The Cornubia recently came runner-up in the Campaign for Real Ale's 2022 Bristol pub of the year award. Phil previously said that he has been a chef since 1976, and he has never had any problems with food hygiene before.
