Popular Bristol Christmas street fayre returns for first time since 2019

One of Bristol’s favourite Christmas events returns for the first time since 2019 this weekend, as the community in Montpelier comes together for its annual fayre.

Since it began back in the early 2010s, the Picton Street Fayre has grown to become a popular Christmas event, with stalls set up by local people and organisations lining Picton Street in Montpelier, musicians and a bar bringing in thousands of people from across the city.

This year’s event - the 11th time the fayre has been held - takes place on Saturday, December 10 from midday, when the festivities will be officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Cllr Paula O’Rourke. The Fayre last took place in 2019 and was postponed in 2020 and 2021 because of the Covid pandemic.

The fayre is a big fundraiser, with the organising committee choosing the local good cause to receive the proceeds - which, being Bristol, mainly come from the cider and mulled wine bar. This year, the proceeds will go to BOSH - Bristol Outreach Services for the Homeless - and Trauma South West, who support traumatised refugees and asylum seekers.

“The Fayre is a community-run event that aims to bring neighbours together and raise money for local charities,” said a spokesperson for the event. “Most years it has managed to raise about £4,000 each year, the bulk of this is made at the cider and mulled wine bar, with festival-goers generously having a drink in aid of charity,” she added..

“As well as more than 100 craft and gift stalls, the stage at the Fayre is opposite Picton Square and has a line-up of musicians playing throughout the afternoon and evening. The Lord Mayor of Bristol has kindly agreed to open up the stage at midday, and then the music will kick-off and carry on until 7pm with local musicians such as Rita Lynch, The Ambling Band, the Sambistas and many others keeping the street rocking,” she added.
