Popular bookshop set to close in Rutherglen shopping centre

A popular bookstore chain is to close a Lanarkshire branch at the end of this month.

The Works in Rutherglen Exchange shopping centre will shut on August 27, with bosses saying the store is no longer "commercially viable".

The closure is another blow for local shoppers, who have seen a number of closures across Rutherglen and Cambuslang in recent years.

The chain did not confirm whether staff are being made redundant as a result of the closure, instead stating that they hoped to find them employment in other branches.

A spokesperson for The Works told Lanarkshire Live: “We can confirm that we will be closing our Rutherglen store after close of trade on August 27.

"We evaluate our store estate on an ongoing basis and unfortunately have come to the decision that this store is no longer commercially viable. In these instances we always do our best to relocate as many store colleagues as possible.

"We have loved being part of the local community and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure. Our customers can continue to shop with us online or at one of our nearby stores, either Glasgow Forge or Glasgow St Enoch Centre, which are both less than 2.5 miles away."

The discount chain sells books, arts and crafts, toys and games, and only opened in Rutherglen in 2019.

Upon opening it created seven jobs for locals.
