Popular Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, widely known as KK, has died about an hour after performing on stage in the Indian metro city of Kolkata.

He was 53.

Fans have taken to social media to express their shock over his death, especially since he posted regarding the "pulsating gig" at Nazrul Mancha a few hours before he died.

"Pulsating gig tonight at Nazrul Mancha. Vivekananda College !! Love you all," he posted.

According to Indian newspaper The Telegraph, the singer had complained of feeling unwell when he returned to the Oberoi Grand hotel after the performance.

He had a performance lined up for today as well.

He was taken to the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) in Alipore where he was declared dead on arrival.

An official CMRI spokesperson told ABC News that he was brought to the hospital at around 10pm on Tuesday.

"The regular procedure is that when somebody is brought in dead to the hospital, the body is handed over to police and an autopsy is conducted, but in the case of somebody as popular as him, we don't know the next steps yet," the spokesperson added.

KK has been widely acclaimed as a playback singer in several languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Marathi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on KK's death, calling it an "untimely demise".

"Saddened by the untimely demise of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK.

"Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti."

Tributes poured in from many popular television personalities too, recalling many of his timeless, romantic songs that spanned generations.

Some people also drew a comparison between his death and that of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who collapsed during a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong in 2015.

"Nothing like moving to the other side while doing the thing you like the most on this side…" added a fan.
