Family and friends of Poppy Devey Waterhouse are planning a touching tribute to the murdered maths graduate "to finish what she began".

Miss Devey Waterhouse's father Rupert and brother Zeb are among those taking part in a half marathon that the 24-year-old mathematician had planned to enter.

A group of loved ones, including nine colleagues at William Hill, will run the 13.1-mile route in her memory as Team Poppy, and raise thousands of pounds for two charities in Leeds.

Miss Devey Waterhouse's father, Rupert Waterhouse, 57, wrote on Facebook : "My daughter Poppy had been planning to run the Leeds Half-Marathon in May this year for charity, along with her colleagues and friends at William Hill.

"Poppy’s brother, Zeb, and I will now be running in her place and in her memory, alongside William Hill’s ‘Team Poppy’ and other friends, to finish what she began.

"She cannot be with us, but she remains an inspiration to us.

"WH have chosen two wonderful local Leeds charities to help raise money for, both of which were central to the work that Poppy began, so please help us in any way that you can – share, donate, or simply wish us well."

So far, Team Poppy has raised more than £7,500 - on a Virgin Money Giving page set up by her father and one by her colleagues - for Martin House and St Gemma's hospices.

The page reads: "We are running in memory of our beloved friend and colleague Poppy Devey Waterhouse, who was tragically taken from us in December last year.

"Poppy was a wonderfully bright and joyful person, with an adventurous spirit, always keen to visit new places, meet new people, and experience new things.

"An exceptionally kind and caring person, Poppy gave much of her own time to give something back, including helping to form a Volunteering and Fundraising committee at work, and we hope to continue in her honour by coming together and raising money for charity."

Miss Devey Waterhouse, who lived in Leeds and was originally from Frome in Somerset, was planning to take on new experiences and challenges, including her first half marathon, in aid of charity in 2019.

The page adds: "It is a challenge that we are determined to see through.

"Our inspiration is someone that brought out the best in all of us, forever encouraging us to do something out of our comfort zone, and motivating us to be better versions of ourselves."

A message from her father read: "Finally, we want to encourage anyone that visits this page to try to embrace all of the joys of life as much as possible, just as Poppy did each and every day - challenge yourselves, experience the world, meet new people, help others, and most importantly, smile."

Miss Devey Waterhouse's father, brother Zeb, 22, and mother, Julie Devey, 56, Mum of mathematician stabbed to death feels she has 'failed her daughter' on Friday as Atkinson was jailed for life with a minimum of 15 years and 310 days.

The family told of their extreme grief and the ways they cherish her memory.

Miss Devey Waterhouse's mother said she wears the ring that her daughter was wearing when she was stabbed to death on December 14 last year, and kisses it each time she thinks of her.

Her father clutched his green jumper, a gift from his daughter, as he addressed Leeds Crown Court, and said he has worn it every day since her death.

The court heard how Atkinson burst into the flat he and Miss Devey Waterhouse still shared on Richmond Hill, Leeds, and used a kitchen knife to inflict more than 100 separate injuries, including 49 knife injuries and 23 separate stab wounds all over her body.
