Pope's pen support, Trippier sparks change, ASM acrobatics - Newcastle moments you may have missed

Newcastle United needed penalties to progress to the fourth-round of the Carabao Cup at the expense of Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening. Nick Pope was the hero of the shootout as his three saves handed the Magpies a 3-2 win following a St James' Park stalemate.

The 0-0 draw in normal time was one of few chances as Newcastle struggled to get going after making eight changes from the 4-1 win over Southampton. The home side grew into the game as Eddie Howe called on the big guns off the bench as Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock tried to break the deadlock in the final stages of normal time.

The clash went to penalties and Newcastle made no mistake with their first three attempts, before missing their final two. However, Pope's save from Malcolm Ebiowei's spot-kick sent the north east outfit into the hat for the next round.

Here are the moments you may have missed from the Carabao Cup third round clash.

Pope's penalty gestures

Pope was the star of the shootout as he made three saves to send the Magpies through to the fourth-round. However, the Newcastle stopper wasn't just helping between the sticks.

Each time a Palace player took their penalty, Pope would proceed to pick the ball up and walk out of the penalty area and personally hand the ball to the Newcastle player stepping up for their effort.

Pope looked to be offering words of encouragement to his co-stars having a go themselves, with three finding the target before Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman failed to find the net. Top class in and out of goal from Pope.

Trippier sparks change

Howe admitted after the game that his side needed a lift as he made a treble substitution in the second-half. The Newcastle boss brought Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes off the bench together in the 60th-minute as Newcastle looked for the opener.

Each player made a huge difference but it took Trippier a matter of seconds to show how he could affect the game. Within seconds of coming onto the pitch, the right-back sprinted into the penalty area in the hope Jonjo Shelvey would find him with a cross-field ball. over the top.

Trippier's early attacking dart into the box meant he instantly had been further up the pitch than Javier Manquillo who he replaced when brought on. The England international was also seen barking his usual orders and venting his fury at not receiving a simple pass from Jamaal Lascelles shortly after coming on.

His introduction sparked Newcastle into life and helped the home side dominate the closing stages - even if they couldn't find the net.

Maxi's back

Allan Saint-Maximin made his eagerly-awaited return to the starting XI on Wednesday evening. But if you think his time on the sidelines has made him any less flamboyant, think again.

The Newcastle flyer wasted no time showing off his acrobatic skills against Palace after failing to control a miss-hit pass early in the first-half. The Frenchman lay on the ground after missing the pass, before flipping himself back to his feet in fine style.

The move got a big cheer from the crowd early on. Saint-Maximin also showed it off against Brentford last season too... Never change, Maxi.
