The Italian Prime Minister, who currently heads the G7, announced the news, emphasizing the importance of ethical guidelines in the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that the presence of His Holiness at the summit will play a crucial role in shaping a regulatory, ethical, and cultural framework for AI. This aligns with Pope Francis' previous calls for an international treaty to ensure that AI technologies are developed and utilized in an ethical manner.

Artificial intelligence has garnered global attention due to advancements in systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT, which can generate human-like text, photos, and music. While AI offers remarkable capabilities, concerns have been raised regarding its impact on employment, privacy, copyright protection, and even broader ethical implications.

During the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Capri, Italy, participants highlighted the cybersecurity risks associated with AI and emphasized the need to ensure the development of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI that prioritizes human-centric and human rights-based principles.

Pope Francis' participation in the G7 Summit session dedicated to artificial intelligence underscores the growing recognition of the importance of ethical considerations in the rapidly evolving field of AI. His presence is expected to catalyze discussions on establishing guidelines that promote the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies on a global scale.
