Pope Francis has recently approved revisions to the funeral rites that will be observed upon his death, with the aim of simplifying the rituals and highlighting his role as a humble bishop. The updated liturgical book, approved by Francis on April 29, replaces the previous edition from 2000 and allows for his burial outside the Vatican, in accordance with his wishes.
At 88 years old, Pope Francis continues to preside over his duties despite some health challenges. During a recent general audience, he displayed his vitality as children joyfully joined him on stage. The decision to revise the papal funeral rites was prompted by the passing of Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI on December 31, 2022.
In a 2023 interview, Pope Francis disclosed his preference to be buried in the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome, departing from the tradition of burial in the grottoes beneath St. Peter’s Basilica. The revisions to the funeral rites, overseen by Monsignor Diego Ravelli, aim to simplify the process by eliminating certain requirements, such as the use of multiple coffins and the elevated bier for public viewing.
Ravelli explained that the changes are intended to underscore the spiritual nature of the pope's funeral, emphasizing his identity as a shepherd and disciple of Christ rather than a worldly figure. The new reforms seek to convey a message of simplicity and humility in honoring the life and legacy of the Roman Pontiff.
