Pope Francis is set to undergo treatment for bronchitis and medical examinations at a hospital in Rome, as announced by the Vatican on Friday. This hospitalization comes amidst concerns about the 88-year-old pontiff's health, given his recent health issues.
The Vatican stated that the pontiff will be admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic for diagnostic tests and continued treatment for ongoing bronchitis. Over the years, Pope Francis has made several visits to the hospital, including undergoing abdominal surgery in 2023.
Despite struggling with bronchitis in recent weeks, Pope Francis continued with his scheduled audiences at the Vatican on Friday morning. However, reports indicate that he has been experiencing difficulties speaking for extended periods due to breathing problems.
Of particular concern is the fact that Francis has a history of lung-related issues, having suffered from severe pneumonia in his youth and undergoing lung surgery. Additionally, he has been seen using a walking stick and wheelchair in recent times, following a fall last month that resulted in an arm injury.

Furthermore, the pontiff also battles diverticulitis, a common condition that affects the colon. In 2021, he underwent surgery to address this issue.
Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis has maintained a busy schedule of events, including a recent 12-day visit to four countries in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. This trip marked one of the longest journeys undertaken by any pope and covered approximately 20,000 miles.
Looking ahead, it was announced that the pontiff is scheduled to meet King Charles III in April, underscoring his commitment to fulfilling his duties despite his health concerns.
