Pope Francis is currently in the 10th day of his hospitalization for a complex lung infection that has led to early stages of kidney insufficiency. The Vatican reported that the 88-year-old pope had a restful night and is continuing his therapies. He is feeding himself and remains in good spirits, not requiring artificial or liquid nutrition.

Medical professionals are closely monitoring the pope's condition, with a recent blood test revealing slight kidney insufficiency that is being managed effectively. Despite his critical condition, Francis has not experienced further respiratory crises since Saturday and was alert and responsive during Mass on Sunday.

Given his age, fragility, and pre-existing lung disease, doctors have emphasized the delicate nature of Francis' health. The main concern remains the potential development of sepsis, a severe blood infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia.

This hospitalization marks the longest period of medical care for Pope Francis during his papacy. In 2021, he spent 10 days at Rome's Gemelli hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a portion of his colon.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York publicly acknowledged the gravity of the situation, describing the faithful as united in prayer at the bedside of ailing Pope Francis. While concerns about the pope's health persist, there has been no indication of resignation or succession plans.

The Vatican is expected to provide further updates on Pope Francis' condition as he continues his treatment for the lung infection and kidney insufficiency.
