Pope Francis passed away on Monday morning from a stroke and irreversible heart failure, the Vatican has revealed.
The death of the 88-year-old religious leader comes a month after he spent five weeks in hospital with severe pneumonia in February. During this time, he reportedly almost died twice.
According to the death certificate released by the Vatican, his official cause of death was “cerebral stroke, coma, irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse”. The Guardian reported that the Pope also suffered from multiple bronchiectases, arterial hypertension and type 2 diabetes.
Pope Francis died from the comfort of his apartment at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican. Before his death, the pope confirmed that he wanted to be buried at the Santa Marta Maggiore church in the Esquilino neighbourhood in Rome.
He specified that he wanted his grave “in the ground” but “without any particular decoration” and his name written in Latin as Francisus.
This goes against the usual tradition of popes being buried in the grottoes beneath St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. However, last year, Pope Francis simplified the rituals required for popes following their deaths.
From Wednesday morning, Pope Francis’ body will be taken to St Peter’s Basilica so the public can pay their respects to the much-loved leader.
The date of the funeral for the 267th pope is yet to be decided. However, the date will be decided by the cardinals on Tuesday. Once the funeral is locked in, it will then be followed by nine days of official mourning.
Pope Francis, who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became pope in March 2013. He has been fondly remembered as a champion for the people due to his criticisms of extravagance and for living the values he preached.
The Catholic church now has 20 days to kick off chats to decide on Pope Francis’ successor.
